＜科学探究科１年生＞ University of Tokyo Training Program: English Reports
Students wrote an English report after the University of Tokyo Training Program. Before participating in the program, they learned how to see the world as science communicators: understanding both the whole picture and the details. This helped them grasp the meaning of the program more deeply and apply what they had learned to their own experiences and future lives.
The following are excerpts from English reports written by some of the students.
“The Training Program That Changed My Mind”
My visit to the University of Tokyo completely changed how I see things.Before this trip, I thought pharmacy was only about making medicine. I looked at cells, chromosomes, and fruit flies, and it was a very good experience. I learned that making a single medicine connects many fields like chemistry, biology, and physics. I was very excited to see the university students. They are not afraid of failure. They use smart ways to find the truth fast. I felt their “logical passion.”Before this trip, I was afraid of making mistakes. But now, this trip changed my mind. This trip changed how I think about failure, and I learned that making mistakes is not a bad thing. I also learned that science can save many people’s lives, like finding cancer early. Someday, I want to try this kind of science research too. From now on, I will not be afraid of making mistakes and want to challenge myself to try new things.
（日本語訳）東京大学への訪問は、私の物の見方（考え方）を完全に変えてくれました。研修の前、私は薬学とは薬を作ることだけだと思っていました。私は細胞や染色体、ショウジョウバエを見て、とても良い経験となりました。一つの薬を作ることは、化学、生物学、物理学といった多くの分野に繋がっているのだと学びました。学生たちを見てとてもワクワクしました。彼らは「論理的な情熱」を持ち、失敗を恐れずに一生懸命研究していました。研修の前、私は間違えることを恐れていました。しかし今、この研修が私の考えを変えてくれました。この経験は私の失敗に対する考え方を変え、間違えることは悪いことではないのだと学びました。
“Tokyo University Report”
The training program taught me how to do my best for things I’m interested in. I have two reasons. First, Tokyo University students in the research lab looked very happy when they were teaching us about research. I think they can try new things continuously because they love science. Second, I think the atmosphere was very good for researching. For example, I saw a lot of calculation formulas on the glass of the laboratory equipment. That makes an atmosphere where they can do their best to try a lot of things. I learned that trying in a good atmosphere and in teams is important, but I would like to try doing my best in any atmosphere.
（日本語訳）この研修プログラムは、僕が興味を持った物についてどうすれば全力で取り組むことができるかを教えてくれました。これには二つの理由があります。一つ目に、研究室にいた東京大学の生徒は僕たちに研究について教えているときにとても嬉しそうに見えました。僕は、彼らは科学が大好きだから継続的に新しいことに挑戦できるのだと思います。二つ目に、研究室の環境は研究をするのにうってつけだと思ったからです。例えば、研究室の実験装置のガラスにはたくさんの数式が書いてありました。このことが彼らが全力で多くのことに挑戦できる環境を作っています。僕は良い環境とチームで挑戦することは大事だということを学びました。しかし、僕はどんな環境でも自分の全力で挑戦していきたいです。
“The Thing That I Can’t Forget”
Through the training program at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tokyo, I experienced the amazing world of advanced life sciences. We visited four laboratories. The genetics laboratory made the biggest impression on me. In the genetics laboratory, I had the chance to see HeLa cells, which come from breast cancer. I had never seen a picture of cancer cells, so it was my first time seeing the real thing. When I looked at them through the microscope, they looked different from normal cells and even seemed a bit scary. The cancer cells are “immortal” and can continue to divide forever. I realized this is why cancer is so feared. I already knew from statistics that cancer is a leading cause of death in Japan, but visiting the laboratory made me realize for the first time that even though cancer cells are tiny, they threaten human lives and cause suffering worldwide. Meanwhile, researchers do difficult experiments day after day to develop new treatments.
Through this experience, I learned not only how fascinating the life sciences are but also how this research connects directly to our lives. Seeing real cancer cells was a big shock, and it made me think deeply about the power and responsibility of science. This experience has motivated me to study biology and medicine even more in the future.
（日本語訳）東京大学薬学部の研修プログラムを通じて、私は最先端の生命科学の素晴らしい世界を体験しました。私たちは4つの研究室を訪問しました。私がその中で最も強い印象を受けたのが遺伝学の研究室です。遺伝学の研究室では、乳がん由来のHeLa（ヒーラ）細胞を実際に見る機会がありました。これまでがん細胞の写真すら見たことがなかったので、本物を見るのはこれが初めてでした。顕微鏡で覗いてみると、それは正常な細胞とは異なって見え、少し不気味にさえ感じられました。がん細胞は「不死」であり、永遠に分裂を続けることができます。なぜがんがこれほど恐れられているのか、その理由が分かった気がしました。日本においてがんが主要な死因であることは、統計データとしてすでに知っていましたが、研究室を訪れたことで、初めてそれを実感として捉えることができました。がん細胞はごく小さなものであるにもかかわらず、世界中で人々の命を脅かし、苦しみを与えています。その一方で、研究者たちは新しい治療法を開発するために、日々困難な実験を積み重ねています。
この経験を通じて、私は生命科学の面白さだけでなく、こうした研究が私たちの生活にどれほど直接結びついているかを学びました。本物のがん細胞を見たことは大きな衝撃であり、科学の持つ力や責任について深く考えるきっかけとなりました。この経験は、将来さらに生物学や医学を学びたいという、私の強いモチベーションになっています。
