English Reports
After participating in the Science Communication Training Program, students wrote reports in English reflecting on their experiences. Before the program, they learned how to view the world through the eyes of science communicators by considering both the big picture and the details. This perspective helped them understand the purpose and significance of the program more deeply and apply what they learned to their own experiences and future lives.
The following are excerpts from some of the students’ English reports.
“Thinking of other people’s feelings”
I think a science communicator should understand each other’s feelings. I learned two things.
First, I played a direction game in Rukuru. The purpose of this game was to give directions to my partner over the phone. What happened was, when my partner told me where to go, I couldn’t figure out what he was saying there. Then we noticed that we might have different maps which have different descriptions on them. When I explained it, since I could not see how my partner felt about my explanations, I wasn’t able to convey it very well. I realized that what my partner thinks can be different from what I think and putting myself in my partner’s shoes is important to communicate accurately.
Second, I learned we can make many people get interested in science and technology by using science communication. Science communicators have to make an effort to give clearer explanations so that others can understand easily. For example, they need to observe other people’s tone of voice and facial expressions to imagine their feelings and make eye contact when they are talking with them. I found out it is important not to use difficult words or finish with only explanations but to let them experience and interact with each other for better understanding.
Through this experience I will try to be in other people’s place and use simple words when I explain something. And I would like to pay more attention to other people’s feelings in my daily life.
“To become a good science communicator”
The training program in Rukuru gave me the skill of communicating with people well and new motivation for studying and club activities. It’s because I learned two important things for good communication as a science communicator from instructors in Rukuru. Firstly, I tried to tell my pair the way to the destination using different maps. I couldn’t explain it to him within the time limit when I tried to tell it unilaterally. However, I could explain it within the time limit when we shared the map features and what we didn’t understand. I learned that I can’t tell people about the key features of experiments as a science communicator if I talk unilaterally just like this experience. Secondly, I learned that I must tell people correct information and keep a good tone of voice and speaking speed when I speak as a science communicator. The lecturer’s tone of voice and speaking speed were very easy to hear.
As for the new motivation I mentioned, there are many messages I got from this program. I have to tell people the correct information about science. So, I think I should study science harder. I will try to treat the science problem as a question from the audience and choose the correct answer. I have to keep the good tone of my voice and speaking speed. I also have to be careful not to speak unilaterally. I can practice these things during the science club activities because the members of the science club practice explain experiments to parents and children for the science event where we work as a staff member. So, I think I will discuss with the members of the science club the parts of my explanation that need improvement and practice explaining the experiment over and over again.
